Thus the Corps of Gendarmes became the first body to officially obtain revolvers. 4,500 revolvers were ordered from the Parisian gunsmith Lefaucheux, 1,600 – from Belgian manufacturer Tanner and 1,000 - from the Sestroretsk arms factory. As a result of tests they chose the Lefaucheux system revolver, which was accepted for the armament of Gendarmes. In 1860 the Chief of Gendarmes raised the question of rearming the lower ranks of the Corps of Gendarmes with revolvers and dragoon sabers instead of smooth-bore muskets, percussion pistols and cavalry sabers. Lefaucheux revolvers, like the Colt revolvers, were ordered only for the individual units of the Russian army, and officers were encouraged to buy this weapon at their own cost. In beginning January 1861 on the initiative of the Main Artillery Directorate an agreement was reached with the Tula gunsmiths Ivan Petrovich and Nikolai Ivanovich Goltyakov for the production of 500 of Colt and 500 Lefaucheux revolvers. The difference is that it was manufactured in Russia! Here is the basic information on the Russian use of the Lefaucheux. It is an 1860s manufactured Lefaucheux pinfire revolver. I've known of the existence of this piece for a long time and the owner finally decided it was time to part with it.
